Er Hawkman. Yep that winged avenger. I have to say that the only thing I know about Hawkman is from the Justice League cartoon and his few appearances in Smallville. I am aware of his past and the relationship with Hawkgirl. However this seems like a left field choice for DC/Warner to try to tackle. Maybe they saw how Marvel handled Thor and they want some of that action.
Warner Bros. Pictures is reportedly seeking scribes to pen a script for “Hawkman”, a film adaptation of the DC comics hero. Here’s the blurb that was recent issued (with thanks toPajiba):
“Part Indiana Jones/Da Vinci Code, part Ghost tentpole about the fictional superhero that appears in D.C. Comic books. He used archaic weaponry and large, artificial wings attached to a harness made of the Nth metal that allows flight. Most incarnations of Hawkman work closely with a partner/romantic interest named Hawkgirl or Hawkwoman in his fight against supervillains. Based on the DC comic.”
On Wednesday, August 31st, DC Comics will launch a historic renumbering of the entire DC Universe line of comic books with 52 first issues, including the release of JUSTICE LEAGUE by NEW YORK TIMES bestselling writer and DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns and bestselling artist and DC Comics Co-Publisher Jim Lee. The publication of JUSTICE LEAGUE issue 1 will launch day-and-date digital publishing for all these ongoing titles, making DC Comics the first of the two major American publishers to release all of its superhero comic book titles digitally the same day as in print.
DC Comics will only publish two comic books on August 31st: the final issue of this summer’s comic book mini-series FLASHPOINT and the first issue of JUSTICE LEAGUE by Johns and Lee, two of the most distinguished and popular contemporary comic book creators, who will be collaborating for the first time. Together they will offer a contemporary take on the origin of the comic book industry’s premier superhero team.
In the hours, days and weeks to come, we’ll have more news about the other titles. Tomorrow, we’ll hear from Co-Publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee about this momentous occasion. Keep checking THE SOURCE for updates about the other first issues.
This year, make history with us.
52 new #1′s! Day and date digital release!
These are some big steps and we still don’t have a lot of details. Is this just a renumbering or is it a full universe reboot and just how much will these digital comics cost?
A full universe reboot will be controversial as people have been reading these versions of the characters for twenty years and some may not be happy that they are going away. Also lets not forget that a great jumping on point is also a great jumping off point!
Can we expect Marvel to respond in the coming weeks or will they wait and see DC to test the waters and then jump in?
At last I hear you cry from the rooftops. The latest installment in the Spy Kids franchise has got a trailer but is any good. Well it looks like a reboot of the franchise and a new family and new kids. The original kids are there but my god how they have grown up.
Jessica Alba seems OK in this role but based on this trailer there is nothing new here and it seems to be more in tone to Spy Kids 1, so take that as you will. Anyway here is the trailer and the synopsis.
On the surface, Marissa Cortez Wilson (Jessica Alba) has it all…married to a famous spy hunting television reporter, a new baby and intelligent twin step kids. But in reality, trying to mother Rebecca (Rowan Blanchard) and Cecil (Mason Cook), who clearly don’t want her around, is her toughest challenge yet. Also, her husband, Wilbur (Joel McHale), wouldn’t know a spy if he lived with one which is exactly the case – Marissa’s a retired secret agent.
Marissa’s world is turned upside down when the maniacal Timekeeper (Jeremy Piven) threatens to take over the planet and she’s called back into action by the head of OSS, home of the greatest spies and where the now-defunct Spy Kids division was created. With Armageddon quickly approaching, Rebecca and Cecil are thrust into action when they learn their boring stepmom was once a top agent and now the world’s most competitive ten year olds are forced to put their bickering aside and rely on their wits. With a little help from a couple of very familiar Spy Kids, Carmen (Alexa Vega) and Juni Cortez (Daryl Sabara), and some mind-blowing gadgets, they just may be able to save the world and possibly bring their family together while they’re at it.
Real Steel comes out in October and stars Hugh Jackman. Below is the first poster from the film and it looks quite cool I think.
A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future where the sport of boxing has gone high-tech, “Real Steel” stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.
Let’s hope the movie lives up to the hype. Also in case you have not seen it the trailer is below just for you geeks.
Take 3 parts Inception to one part ‘Fantastic Voyage’ mix them under the gentle heat of the fashion of animated episodes and add a touch of cinnamon and in nutshell we have this episode. It’s Fringe dusting off it’s old hookey cliché sci-fi and having a ball with it. There are spoilers in the line work of this review.
This was a potentially risky episode and give some of the missed beats we’ve experienced recently I thought it might fall apart. I was wrong for all the impressive animation and little genre nods (I think I saw a bit of the Matrix in the early live action scenes) this was an episode with strong writing and that rested on the performances of the excellent regular cast.
For once all the cast got a good crack at the whip. Lance Reddick gets to do comedy and show us he can smile, which after 5 seasons of the Wire and 3 of Fringe came as a shock. More importantly his performance was very believable. The rest of regulars and a special guest get to do a stellar turn from inside Olivia’s mind. Anna Torv gets a bit of rest this episode but her performance is essential to deliver the threat in the opening portions of the tale and to deliver that killer sting at the end, but more on that later.
The animation is well done. It’s good the cast are all confident voice actors as one can’t expression the subtleness of emotion as well in animation. All the micro-movements get lost. Of course what the animation does allow is for Fringe to go mega budget with Zombies, Blimp chases, parachute fights and all other manner of fun and games. That’s where this episode fills its boots.
Some might ask ‘what’s the point of this episode ?’ I think it let’s us see Walter andBellin action one last time. The dynamic between them seems true and echoes what one expects from the show and to me, also rang true to the prequel comic as well. To use an overused modern phrase I think the episode gives a sense of closure to the Bell-Walter relationship. It also is a nice nod to certain other roles Nimoy might have played.
Once again that annoyingly talented Torv woman manages to steal the show. When I first started to watch Fringe I used to moan how dull Olivia was. What an idiot I was. Torv managed to harness her natural charisma and keep it locked down in Olivia’s clipped WASP type mannerisms and 1990s professional action hero demeanour. When let off the rein in the breezy confident Fauxlivia or the creepy lecherous Belivia we see it come out and be used in two different ways. Here with the ‘freed’ Olivia the easy option, the lazy option would be to revert to playing Olivia as Fauxlivia. That however is not what Anna Torv does – she seems to dial it in exactly right and ‘our’ Olivia is recognisable in this more confident woman.
Over the past few years there has been a lot of talk about a Power Man movie. Power Man is actually a man called Luke Cage. He has super strength and nearly invulnerable skin. He has been in his own comics but also had a long standing partnership with Iron Fist. But who has done their own audition video?
Power Man / Luke Cage
Rather than Marvel shouting out to actors we have had a few actors shout out to Marvel including Isaiah Mustafa (the Old Spice guy), Terry Crews, Tyrese Gibson, Henry Simmons, Brian J White and Idris Elba (Stringer Bell, The Wire). Read the rest of this entry »

X-Men: First Class charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, and reveals a secret history of famous global events. Before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Not archenemies, they were instead at first the closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop armageddon. In the process, a grave rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men
Before I go into full review mode I want to set the scene here. When they first announced this movie my first thoughts were “not another prequel”. X-Men Last Stand was just dire and had hardly any redeeming features, Wolverine was better but still a bit of a mess in places, but then some details emerged about First Class that made me think it might not be all bad. Bryan Singer was back in the captains chair as Producer and looking at a specific story set in the 60’s, then Matthew Vaughn came on board as the Director. So far so good. I like Singer and have loved Vaughn’s movies so far. Not far behind was Jane Goldman to help with the screenplay and after her great work on Stardust and Kick Ass I was getting excited.
Then the cast started to come together with James McAvoy announced as Charles Xavier, this is where I new I had gotten my hopes up to high. I was not a fan of McAvoy and have never been impressed with his work. A few other cast members were announced that did not install confidence in me so with this in mind I quietly pushed X-Men: First Class to the back of my mind.
We do not have long to wait for this JJ Abrams (Director) and Steven Spielberg (Producer) collaboration called Super 8. It has been shrouded in secercy but the curtains are slowly opening. Here is the new poster and also a new clip. This movie looks like a return to Spielberg’s old SF roots and could become a classic if done right.
In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth – something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.

EA have released a new FIFA 12 video trailer that shows the game’s new Impact System, which will see players react to tackles depending on exactly where and how an impact hits their body, as opposed to relying on a handful of animations depicting stumbles and falls.
“The result is physical play that looks astonishingly authentic,” OXM said of the feature, noting that specific injuries will also be based on new physics recognition (which has its biggest impact in career modes) and stronger players will be more resilient.
PlayStation 3 owners who want booming sound without noise complaints from the neighbors will be in luck this September. That’s when Sony will release the official wireless headset for the PlayStation 3, the latest officially sanctioned accessory for the gaming console.
Priced at $99.99, the headset will sport 7.1 virtual surround sound and a retractable microphone as well as an easily accessible microphone mute button. Battery status and sound control will also be displayed onscreen via a headset status update. The PS3 headset is the latest Sony-stamped peripheral for the PS3.
Beware that this may be some news that you do not want to hear in fear of spoilers.
The internet has been abuzz with rumors that along with Loki and possibly the Skrulls that another villain could be heading to the screen. Before I reveal more I just want to say that this could ring true because of a few things.
Last year at Comicon San Dieago, Marvel were showing off the Infinity Gaulet and also it was seen in Thor in Odin’s vault. Read on if you want to know more…
Well sort of. It seems that the actor who played the teenage Vampire Adam, Craig Roberts, has spoken to the fine folks at SFX about a possible return. After that superb ending of the last series I am really interested to see where they go.
I’m really happy to do Being Human again because it’s a fantastic show, and if Becoming Human wants to go again, I’m game.
On Tuesday evening I was greeted at the Worthing Pavillion by a rather talkative couple of Stormtroopers. Now you might think this kind of thing is a regular occurrence, but Worthing isn’t the evil clone army hub which it once was, and is now mostly filled with an ageing generation. However this was a wonderful, fun start to what would turn out to be an hilarious evening.
