Dissecting Worlds Request Audio Feedback for Series 4

Posted by clarkythecruel on April 30, 2011

Having innovated with guest hosts for our Series 4 on Gender and Sexuality in Genre fiction the quarrelsome pair of Kehaar and Matt would like to invite audio contributions to our Conclusions episode which is likely to be recorded about the end of June.

But there’s no need to wait till them – think there is something we missed, were wide of the mark on a series or just plain in error in our examinations of the subject so far – let us know!

We’ve missed Gor novels and Legend of the Seeker in the last episode both of which are rich with sexuality issues and we never discussed Y: The Last Man in our Dystopias episode so we’d especially welcome thoughts on them but really anything goes.

We’re looking for 3-5 minutes MP3 audio segments because it’s so much nicer than use referring to peoples emails – but we’ll do that too of course.

So come on people get your iPhones or headphones out and send your feedback to dissectingworlds@yahoo.co.uk  Shy buggers can email there too.

Fringe Season 3 Episode 15 Subject 13

Posted by clarkythecruel on April 30, 2011

Fringe visits the past, the 1985 of Season 2’s Peter to be precise and in so doing comes a little unstuck.

Digging in the past means there might be spoilers.

So we explore in the blue parallel Walter’s efforts to find a subject that can travel to the other side, while at home Peter is refusing to settle in and knows that he is in the wrong universe. We also get to see the suffering of the Walternate family dealing with the loss of Peter.

Now I haven’t seen Season 1 but my real problem with this episode is that it presupposes a prior relationship between Peter and Olivia – a fleeting childhood friendship which I’ve seen no evidence of. This seems a pretty considerable element of retro-conning and was a jump to far for me.

John Noble does a great turn as does Orla Bradly as Elizabeth Bishop a woman struggling to raise a son who is not her own and dealing with consequences of that is terrific. The child actors are good too. However I don’t think it’s enough to save this story.

There is an old horror maxim that one should hold off showing the monster, The Monster her being the difficulties and dramas of Peter’s adjustment to the Blue-side. Personally I think that was better left to the viewers imagination and that Fringe could continue with its normal efficiency in driving forward the plot. This very strangely for Fringe, to me at least, felt like a filler episode. That is not to say the episode doesn’t have its strengths,

An effective and chilling bit of this episode is the experiments Walter subjects Olivia too. Here we see an element of ruthlessness in Walter that we know form the previous episode that Walternate won’t stoop too. It’s very effective. There is also a failure of stewardship by Walter which is more chilling and while he pulls through that ruthless kernel behind our loveable dotty professor is very visible. This at least is very promising for Walter’s arc going forward –especially if he manages to regrow the brain segments he asked William Bell to remove perhaps?

So a weak episode of Fringe for me, naturally I’d rather than a weak episode of Fringe than a whole season of Stargate SG-1 and I’ll still be watching but a rare fumble of the ball here.

Immortals -Teaser Trailer

Posted by geeksyndicate on April 29, 2011

Eons after the Gods won their mythic struggle against the Titans, a new evil threatens the land. Mad with power, King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) has declared war against humanity. Amassing a bloodthirsty army of soldiers disfigured by his own hand, Hyperion has scorched Greece in search of the legendary Epirus Bow, a weapon of unimaginable power forged in the heavens by Ares.

Secretly chosen by Zeus, Theseus must save his people from Hyperion and his hordes. Rallying a band of fellow outsiders-including visionary priestess Phaedra (Freida Pinto) and cunning slave Stavros (Stephen Dorff) – one hero will lead the uprising, or watch his homeland fall into ruin and his Gods vanish into legend.

Not sure what to expect from this film but I’m a sucker for fantasy and it sure does look pretty. Also Mickey Rourke is looking pretty bad ass in this as the villain.

So as we reported earlier this week Marvel have been working on their own MMO and after a press confernece launching the news we now have more infomation.

  • Brian Micheal Bendis will be the head writer on the MMO.
  • The game will be free to play…that’s right FREE!
  • So far it’s been announced for the PC only but my gut tells me it won’t just be for the PC.
  • Doctor Doom will be the main villain of the game.
  • Some of the characters you can play as will be Thor, Captain America, Spider-Man, Wolverine,Nova, Hulk, Iron Man and we are promised many more. Apparently Marvel MMO will contain more character than any other Marvel game previously released.

Historical Horror Comic Launches Fundraiser

Posted by matt pease on April 28, 2011

The guys over at Historical Horror Comics are trying to raise enough money through kickstarter so they can get their comic printed and into the hands of the masses. why not check out their website and if you like what you see donate some cash! The more money you pledge the more stuff you get when they hit their target.

Press Release:

Comics make kids evil!

That’s a fact. Or at least it was in 1954, when the United States Senate Subcommittee to Investigate Juvenile Delinquency convened. As a result of these hearings, comic book publishers feared government regulation and formed their own self-regulatory body that created the Comics Code Authority, purging comics of everything from violence to divorce. For 57 years this code affected comics publishing in one form or another. In late January of 2011, DC Comics and Archie Comics (the last surviving members of the original pact) both decided to drop the Comics Code from their products. Comics are free to make kids evil again and the world will never be the same.

THINK OF THE CHILDREN is a satirical horror comic about the events leading to the original Comics Code Authority. The members of the Senate Subcommittee are secret monster hunters, seeking to destroy evil children, who they believe are corrupted by the stories of EC Comics. So that the story can reach as wide an audience as possible, the creators released it as a free webcomic in February of 2011 at:http://comicsmakekidsevil.com

Created byChristian Sager andEC Steiner, THINK OF THE CHILDREN is designed for print publication, with plans for a hand-made, hardbound, sculpted artifact book. With the increasing popularity of digital comics, they want to create a physical book that the reader will treasure. To raise money to produce this artifact, the creators launched a Kickstarter campaign in late April at:

http://kck.st/ha0Uu1

Funding from Kickstarter will pay for the print production of THINK OF THE CHILDREN, including:

  1. Hardbound davey board covers set on cloth bound hinges.
  2. Asculpted resin seal embedded in the front cover.
  3. Interior printing on Dur-O Tone, 70# Newsprint.
  4. Laser etched line art on the back cover.
  5. A color overlay in the middle of the book.
  6. An inside front cover book plate.
  7. An inside back cover library card and envelope, listing donors and those who assisted in production.

REVIEWS:

“Lovecraftian horror meets 50s exploitation film — with a dash of William S. Burroughs for good measure!”
– Boing Boing

“File under: ‘things we can’t believe someone didn’t do before’”
– Comics Alliance

“An alternative history for the formation of the 1954 Comics Code Authority, one which sees horror-hooked children mutating into hideous, fleshy monsters — but still begs to ask, who’s the real bad guy here? Art imitates life, and pokes fun at it.”
– Rue Morgue magazine

Titan Comics Go Digital

Posted by matt pease on April 28, 2011

Titan Publishing has today announced the release of it’s very own digital comics app for the ipod, ipad and iphone devices which means you can now get “Tank Girl” and “Lenore” digitally for the first time ever.

Press Release:

Tank Girl & Lenore Make Digital Debut in New Titan Comics App

Titan Publishing is pleased to announce the launch of a brand new comics app, featuring Tank Girl and Lenore comics, available on iPhone and iPad for the first time ever!

The new stand-alone app allows iPhone, iPod touch or iPad users to explore Titan’s digital comics portfolio, including – for the first time in digital format – Lenore volumes 1& 2 (Roman Dirge), Tank Girl: Bad Wind Rising (Alan Martin & Rufus Dayglo) and Tank Girl: Skidmarks (Martin & Dayglo).

The dark surreal world of Roman Dirge comes to life on the iPhone and iPad with the digital debut of his cult comic creation Lenore. These gruesomely grisly tales see Lenore, the cute little dead girl, and her twisted menagerie of demented friends do battle with Nazi zombies, avoid the unrequited love of Mr. Gosh, and fend off the massed forces of Heck and an overeager, hungry earthworm. Your Apple device will never be the same again!

Bad Wind Rising is the brand new Tank Girl series by Alan Martin and Rufus Dayglo, which sees Tank Girl and her long-term partner Booga split up in dramatic and outrageous circumstances. Described by Ain’t It Cool News as ‘possibly this year’s coolest comic!’, the series is a must-read for all Tank Girl fans!
Martin and Dayglo’s previous series Skidmarks sees Tank Girl participating in an Outback ‘take-no-prisoners’ race in an attempt to win prize money for her friend Barney’s operation. The series is also available digitally for the first time in the new app.

For the first time Titan’s wide-ranging portfolio is available in one app, featuring exclusive free content including WWE Heroes, Transformers (exclusive UK strips), Shaun the Sheep and Wallace & Gromit. Brand new comics are set to be released by Titan via the app throughout the year.

To explore Titan’s digital comics, simply go online to the iTunes app store and search ‘Titan Comics’ to download the app.

More information about the app can be found at TitanMagazines.com.

Advert Break – PAX BRITANNIA: Anno Frankenstein

Posted by geeksyndicate on April 28, 2011

I’ve got a Pax Britannia book sitting on my shelf that I never read and I know I feel shamefaced as the concept behind the series (steampunk adventure) sounds right up my street. Apparently this latest novel in the series titles ‘Anno Frankenstein’ is one of a series of novels featuring the adventurer Ulysses Quicksilver (man what a name).

I plan to seek out some of Quicksilver’s earlier adventures before I try this one. In the meantime check out the press release for more info.

Game of Thrones Season 1 Episode 2 – The King’s Road

Posted by brogen on April 27, 2011

Daenerys, still adjusting to her new life as a married woman, turns to her handmaiden for advice and tips on how to… ahem… satisfy her new husband.

Ned Stark and the King set out on their journey back to the capital – Ned has agreed to become is friend’s right hand man. Ned’s daughters go with him, but he leaves his wife and sons – including the critically injured Bran – behind. The King is aware of Daenerys’s marriage and the implications of the exiled siblings’ alliance with Khal Drogo. He believes that a war is coming.

Catelyn Stark stays behind in Winterfell to tend to the injured Bran and the city. She makes some startling discoveries out about the King’s wife, and rides to intercept her husband and tell him of this new betrayal.

This episode of Game of Thrones is still a little all over the place – plot wise – but it has been divided up into three, perhaps four, distinct groups and storylines. Surely it will not be long before these converge, but for the time being, this separation allows the audience to catch up with the characters and their relationships with one another.

Plot wise, not an awful lot happens in this episode. Daenerys flirts a little with her handmaiden – who used to be a prostitute – and manages to regain some control in the bedroom, which surely is a comment on how she feels in her life at the moment. The King and Stark set out on their journey, but not before Catelyn tells her husband of her fears that he will cheat on her again; he already has two illegitimate sons.

One of these sons – Jon Snow – sets out for the Wall and begins his quest to become part of the Night Watch. Tyrion Lannister goes with him, and again is some welcome comic, and sarcastic, relief in the episode. Stark’s other illegitimate son, Bran, did not die from being pushed off the tower and an assassin is sent to finish the job. Happily, Catelyn and one of the direwolves get in the way, and the assassin is assassinated. Catelyn sets off to intercept her husband and tell him of the Lannister’s treachery. That’s just not going to end well.

Ned’s eldest daughter, who is travelling with him, is being groomed to marry prince Joffrey. This delights her, but Joffrey is a horrible child and – after being emasculated by Tyrion – takes his anger out on someone who cannot attack him back. That is, until a direwolf intervenes and protects those who cannot protect themselves.

The Lannisters just get more and more hateful with every episode. There have already been assassination attempts, lies, incest and now the direwolf is executed for protecting its masters. The problem is, though, that the characters are so well played by Lena Heady, Peter Dinklage and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, that they really are the characters that the audience can’t get enough of. Their involvement in the attempted murder of Bran is going to be a great story to keep an eye on, especially now that Bran is awake.

The inclusion of the Wall and the Night Watch in this episode, though subtle, reminds the audience that there is something more beyond the walls – the Winter Walkers – who probably will not take kindly to either of the parties that are sure to end up battling it out for the throne – the King and Viserys. I can’t wait to see more of them, and this supernatural side of the show.

The pace of the show has improved in this second episode – it does not feel near to it’s 55 minute running time – and while we are gaining a lot more information, it does not feel as though we are being spoon fed. The characters talk amongst themselves, and as they do, we gain a little more insight. The performances are all strong, especially the evil characters – Cersei and Joffrey – and of course Peter Dinklage is a treat to watch, even if his motivations are becoming slightly less clear. Yes, the story is still muddled, but there are so many characters to get to grips with, it is bound to get clearer as time goes on. One small complaint though – the opening credits, while clever, beautifully stylised and set the scene of the divide in this world – are just too darn long. Say what you will about Grey’s Anatomy, but that show sure has the titles down to a fine art – cold start, title card, back to the action. Long opening titles can create dislocation in the show, and Game of Thrones‘ opening sequence is almost 1 minute 20 seconds long.

Overall though, the opening episode of Game of Thrones caught all of our attention, and this follow up episode will ensure that the show keeps us enthralled.
