Werewolves – exclusive sneak review

Posted by Liz on July 29, 2010

With big thanks to Kat over at Abrams & Chronicle Books for this exclusive sneak peek at a very cool book they are putting together for release in October.

WEREWOLVES was illustrated by Allyson Haller and written by Paul Jessup

Werewolves is an illustrated journal by a young girl called Alice.  It starts on the night her and her older brother Mark get attacked in the local park by a pack of dogs. The journal is really just that – Alice writing down her thoughts and feelings as she starts noticing changes in her brother and herself.

It records her progressively more feral dreams and thoughts.  A sworn vegetarian she finds herself deeply conflicted but pragmatic about her midnight raids on the thawing steak in their fridge.  The accompanying artwork is beautiful – at times surreal and at times strongly vivid, it reflects Alice’s feelings and tells us as much as the short descriptive paragraphs she writes.

Her brother Mark starts hanging out with a group of unpleasant older boys.  They go camping and invite Alice along but she’s hesitant.  She does not like these boys and she’s worried about her brother.  He’s always been an outsider and acted strangely, but he now acts even stranger.  Compounded with how he’s acting, she’s noticed a van following her around and she makes sure not to be anywhere on her own where she can’t take care of herself.

Her dreams become more bloodthirsty and feral.  She wakes up covered in blood, feeling nauseous, with torn clothes. Her brother eventually convinces her to join them on in the woods, on their camping trip.  There she meets Tomas and he reveals that Mark, Alice and the boys Mark now hangs out with, are all werewolves.

Alice doesn’t believe him at first, thinking he means they are wolves, as in inner predators, a bunch of new agers.  But when Tomas transforms before her eyes, she has no choice but to believe.

She is slowly drawn into running with the wolf pack.  She explains the pack dynamics and what it feels like to run and feel free.  Combined with this, Alice shows how she worries about her humanity, taking a chance to go into town, where she meets some hunters.  They warn her about the pack, that both Alice and her brother are in danger because of them.  That the hunters realise that they are still close to human and can be saved, especially as there is a rumoured cure out there.

It’s a very interesting story with wonderful rich illustrations.  It would be wrong to call it a graphic novel because it’s not the usual style we see graphic novels coming in.  The best description is definitely an illustrated journal as we are sharing dark thoughts and feelings of a young woman who feel more and more vulnerable in a world where nothing is what it seems.

The overall feel of Werewolves is one of growing isolation, even when part of the pack and through Alice’s astute comments we run the gamut of feelings with her, experiencing fear and elation and concern about her brother Mark and his role within the pack.

However, having said all of that, Werewolves is one of those books that you will have to have once you’ve seen it in the “flesh” so to speak.  The illustrations and storytelling is unique and beautiful, making it one of those rare books that you want to give as a gift, but you don’t want to really share it with anyone else because it is just too cool.

Werewolves should be out in October here in the UK from Chronicle Books.

Geek Gadge – Battlemech vs PC means we all win

Posted by geeksyndicate on July 29, 2010

Now this image of a Warhammer 40000 Battlemech that was built by a Spanish gamer called Pinchillo is cool in itself I’m sure you will agree. It even has motorised joints and rotating chain guns  but when you see the next picture you can turn the geek cool dial-up to maximum.

That’s right this Battlemech also doubles as a PC Case…I know it doesn’t get much cooler than that and it got me thinking if I could what kind of case mod would I have for my PC. Well seeing that I’m an Indiana Jones fan my logical choice was….

Of course my Ark of the Covenant PC case would come with the standard, head exploding Wrath of God feature if you opened it which would make fitting the latest graphic card a real bitch.

So what would your dream PC case look like?

Everquest II goes free-to-play

Posted by Amaechi on July 28, 2010

SOE– will unleash a free version of the popular MMO Everquest II titled Everquest II: Extended. The game will operate parallel to the paid version and will be effectively a separate game from Everquest II.

Instead of adapting the entire Everquest II to the free-to-play model like Dungeons & Dragons Online and LOTR: Online, SOE is bifurcating the game and will release two distinct entities. Players will have the option of taking part in the subscription-based game or the completely free game. Extended will give players access to all the paid game’s zones, including those added with the game’s Shadow Odyssey expansion.

Extended will adopt a microtransaction business model, whereby players can purchase power-up potions, armor, classes, races, weapons, mounts, and more through the marketplace. Additionally, Extended will use a smaller Web-based application download model allowing would-be players faster access to the game.

Everquest II: Extended is currently pegged to be released “on or around August 17.”

A Team Press Event – Part 1

Posted by Liz on July 28, 2010

It was a very nervous me who pootled down the road from my Real Life job to the Dorchester on Park Lane to attend the A Team Press Event to mark the release of The A Team movie.

I’ve never been to a press conference before – well I have, but not with you know, famous people that you see in the movies and such – so I wasn’t sure what to expect.  In the end, it turned out pretty easy to handle.

The room where the event was being held in the Dorchester was lovely and roomy, we were given coffee or tea or water and cookies to keep ourselves entertained.  After a wait that almost started to feel like a wait, Alex Zane came bounding in looking crazymad and very cute as usual, complete with guy-liner.  He grabbed his seat and immediately started bringing the guests in.  We had the whole cast in attendance which was pretty awesome, including Joe Carnahan, the director/screenwriter.

Everyone taking their seats

Zane asked Joe what it felt like to be the one to bring The A Team to the big screen.  Joe said it felt fantastic, and what with the tremendous welcome the cast had at last night’s premiere at Leicester Square, he felt pretty positive.

(there was some ruckus during this part of the talk, at the beginning as Jessica had overfilled her glass of water and Sharlto felt the need to lean over and sip at it profusely to stop it from spilling – much laughter and hilarity ensued)

Zane segued in the question I wanted to ask the team – damn you Alex Zane, damn you! – and mentioned the camaraderie in the team, did they have to work at it?  He directed the question to Liam – I am twenty foot tall – Neeson.  Liam commented that they had been lucky, with everyone getting along well and that there had been no egos on the set, which helped towards the easy camaraderie on screen.

Rampage, Neeson, Carnahan

The next question was directed at Sharlto, asking him how it felt bringing such an iconic figure, such as Murdoch to the screen.  Sharlto has this lovely, almost shy way, about himself that invites you to be his friend.  He spoke with great passion about watching the show when growing up as a child in South Africa, saying that Murdoch’s character was one of the things that inspired him to get into making shows and movies.

Next up Jessica was asked how she managed to deliver that deadpan killer one liner in the movie: “They are trying to fly that tank” with such seriousness. There was much laughter at this as yes, there is a tank hurtling towards earth in the movie and yes, the guys do try and fly it.  It is silly and over the top and very tongue in cheek.  Jessica deadpanned: I said it the way Joe told me to.

Jessica and Sharlto

Zane mentioned his guy-liner and asked how it felt bringing Face to the screen.  Sharlto erupted in laughter, as did the rest of the panel.  Bradley hammed it up saying that he doesn’t really think that Face was really vain, he just thought of him as toned and tanned.

An audience member asked if they sustained any injuries.  Liam Neeson confessed he hurt himself getting out of the one truck as it was so high.  Bradley Cooper said he got muscle strain walking to his trailer as it was so far away.

Zane realised that Rampage had not spoken yet and checked to make sure he is okay.  Rampage had everyone in stitches, complaining about how early they had to get up this morning to do various film and press events and how him and Neeson were the ones hanging around clubs and dancing whilst Bradley and and Sharlto were the ones curling up with comfy books.

There were several more questions, all great fun, and well answered by the team.   I don’t want to throw everyone dead with The A Team things in one fell swoop, so I’ll do another batch of write-ups for Friday for a Part 2.  By then I may even have figured out how to download the audio from my iphone.
