PS3 goes 3D on June 10

Posted by Amaechi on May 31, 2010

Sony will kick off 3D gaming on home consoles when PS3 goes 3D on June 10, Sony Japan has confirmed.

On that day Sony will release patches to update the first games on the console to run in full 3D, coinciding with the release of its new 3D Bravia TV sets. Which we want more than life itself.

The first games to go 3D are PSN titles WipEout HD, Super Stardust HD (aka Star Strike HD in Japan) and Pain (aka Mr. Pain). Owners of WipEout HD and Super Stardust will receive the 3D patches for free, which is nice.

Sony Japan has also detailed plans for a Bravia promotional campaign which awards these three games and a 3D demo for Motorstorm 2 for free to anyone who buys a Bravia 3DTV set.

Sony also confirmed that PS3 will require a separate firmware update to support new 3D Blu-ray discs. Sony says that the new firmware update will be released ‘by the end of the year’. The first 3D Blu-ray films are expected to arrive this summer.

Advert Break – Independent Computer Animated Sci-Fi Film / “Race”

Posted by geeksyndicate on May 28, 2010

The Synopsis: On the high energy Star Car racing circuit, driver Trance Caldron and Team Earth are independent, undisciplined, and out to prove themselves.  After they stumble onto an attempt by archrival Team Tagmatian to overthrow the peacekeeping Alliance leadership, the prestigious Star Car Championship becomes a mach speed backdrop for a deadly showdown where the fate of the universe hangs in the balance.  Trance must push his car, his team, and himself to the limit.  In a race between good and evil… Winning is everything.

The project is the first self-produced feature from Hyper Image, a Post Production and Animation Studio in Glendale, California.  After about a decade of development, production, post production, and a long search for distribution, we’re really looking forward to the release.

The director, Robert Brousseau, has previously helmed numerous projects, including episodes of the animated “Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles” and “Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century,” for which he was nominated for an Emmy.

Meanwhile, screenwriter, Rhonda Smiley, has written for countless live action and animated television shows, including the Rick Springfield series, ”High Tide,” “Tarzan: The Epic Adventures,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation,” and “Totally Spies!”

James Hereth served as editor on the film and voiced the lead character.  Previously to that, he produced the television movie, “The X-Team,” starring Eric Mabius, and acted in the series, “Mowgli: The New Adventures of the Jungle Book.”

Green Lantern: The Animated Series is coming to Cartoon Network

Posted by geeksyndicate on May 28, 2010

According to The Hollywood Reporter the Cartoon Network is working on a Green Lantern animated series.

Phil Kent, chairman and CEO of Time Warner’s Turner networks unit, showed a slide with some of Cartoon Network’s original programming here Thursday at TW’s investor day.

It included the title “Green Lantern: The Animated Series.”

However, before you get too excited, the show is not due to air until ‘a while’ after the Green Lantern film hits our screens next June.

I think this is great news. I miss shows like Batman TAS, Superman TAS, Justice League and JLU.  If this latest animated addition can hit those same epic high notes of it’s predessors then we should be onto a winner folks.

If we get a similar look and feel to the direct to DVD animated film ‘Green Lantern: First Flight’ then I think that should keep the fans happy. At the moment though it’s still early days with no word on who’s going to be handling the animation or any voice casting.

James McAvoy Cast as Professor X in X-Men: First Class

Posted by geeksyndicate on May 28, 2010

So it seems things are moving a long quickly with  X-Men: First Class which will focus on how Professor X and Magneto became bitter enemies. With Matthew Vaughn in the director’s chair and Jane Goldman penning the script we now have our first bit of casting news.

James McAvoy, who played the lead in the film adaptation of Mark Millar’s Wanted will play Professor Charles Xavier aka Professor X. I imagine the casting of Magneto won’t be too far behind.

Waiting For The Trade – Retro review – JLA: Riddle of the Beast

Posted by Dave on May 28, 2010

Writer: Alan Grant
Penciller: Carl Critchlow, Simon Davis, Glenn Fabry, Jon Foster, Rafael Garres , Doug Alexander Gregory, Hermann Mejia, Jim Murray, Alex Horley, Andrew Robinson, Liam Roger Sharp, Greg Staples, Saverio Tenuta, John Watson, Martin T. Williams
Letterer: Ken Lopez

It’s not often that I review something where the list of artists is in serious jeopardy of being longer than the review. However unlike a lot of books that get passed about through creative teams due to creative or sales problems, in this instance it’s entirely planned. This 2001 OGN is in the now-ignored DC Elseworlds line, where well-known DC characters are set in an alternate universe, often with a twist. In this instance our story introduces us to a young lad called Robin Drake, the soon of a Goodman and subject of the fantasy land of Haven.

When Robin visits the seer Riddler he hears a prophecy which sets him on a journey of the DCU through a Tolkien lens, from Amazonia to Gotham Crags and Kryptonia to the Falls of Apokalips. His mission is to unify the people of the world to fight the titular Beast. Along the way he encounters familiar DC characters all of whom are delivered in a variety of painted styles by the artists listed above.

This painted look adds to the books classic feel and largely the artists stay on model and while the transition isn’t seamless I don’t think you’d expect it to be.

It’s a slight shame that the story isn’t quite as strong as the art, there’s nothing bad about it as such but it doesn’t really manage to either capture the epic scope of fantasy literature or the twisted genius of some other Elseworlds. I think in part this is because in very little page count you’re asked to cover a massive number of DC characters so the only one that gets any depth is Robin, and as he’s our everyman he’s a little bit of a cipher.

Posted by geeksyndicate on May 27, 2010

Pulse is a tense, unnerving story focusing on Hannah, who resumes her training at one of the country’s top teaching hospitals a year after her mother’s death. She is soon terrified by strange visions and the threatening behaviour of her ex-boyfriend and star surgeon Nick, and wonders if she’s come back too soon. Beneath the hospital’s reputation of medical excellence she discovers a secret network of dangerous experiments pushing back the boundaries of science….

Paul Cornell the writer of the show has just announced  on twitter that you can now catch the pilot episode  online right now.

You can check out the pilot here.

Here’s the most important part if you liked the show make sure you leave a comment as this will be one of the ways to help support show in it’s attempt to get a full series which is something I know I’d like to see happen.

I’ve already seen the pilot and I can heartily recommend you get your asses over to the website and give it a watch online as it’s fantastic.

British International Comic Show launches a brand new website!

Posted by geeksyndicate on May 27, 2010

With the awesome Bristol Comic and Small Press Expo behind us and the fab MCM Expo only a few days away it seems that we are caught in the grip of the UK comic con season. Not ones to miss out on the fun, it seems the organizers behind the British International Comic Expo have begun gearing up the marketing for their show. The guys have just launched a new all signing, all dancing website to help promote the event which will take place  on the 16th-17th October.

The site is still  new so there may be a few teething troubles but from what I’ve seen of it so far it looks very swish and professional. On the site you can find all sorts of information on the convention as well as info on the guests expected to attend which so far include

BRYAN HITCH
CHARLES VESS
CHARLIE ADLARD
HUNT EMERSON
JIMMY BROXTON
SIMON TOFIELD
TOMMY LEE EDWARDS
YUKO SHIMIZU

You can check out the site here and you can also follow the show’s developments on Twitter

V Season 1 Episode 8 – We Can’t Win

Posted by brogen on May 27, 2010

Well it seems as though the string pullers behind V have heard that people are not happy with the show, so they are attempting to spice, and speed it up a little. The thing is, it feels as though they are not quite sure how to do it.

The main point of the episode is that Erica and her band of anti-V freedom fighters want to catch one of the Vs, after they find a whole bunch of Fifth Column-ers murdered. This is literally what they spend the episode trying to figure out. They eventually use someone – Alex – who escaped from the murderous Vs as bait, and even though Alex does, the rebels catch the sniper. Only problem is, that he is human.

There are some issues with this whole idea, apart from the glaring one of what they were going to do with a cornered V once they got hold of them. There is entirely far too much reliance on Jack’s priesthood to get things done. There seems to be this belief that unless a man of the cloth tries to coerce someone then there is no point. The character of Alex seems to have just been introduced to die, which would be fine if he had more to do in the episode except fill space.

As well as this, Anna is in Geneva trying to give the humans the “gift” of blue energy – clean, sustainable energy – but because she is not invited to speak, she is excluded from the talks. Conveniently though, a monsoon strikes a small island and Anna is able to turn the tragedy to her advantage and show off what Blue Energy can do. Of course, she is then invited in to the UN, but there is still a voice of scepticism in the form of the secretary general who maintains that she played politics with tragedy and should not be trusted.

Thank god someone in power is listening to their gut and not allowing the Vs to charm them; the show seemed to be going down the route that everyone in power was charmed by the Vs… And it was getting a little old. The secretary general seems to be the voice of reason. It seems that he is going to have a bigger part to play in the series overall.

In other news, Tyler is getting more and more annoyed with Erica for not telling him the truth about who his father is, and this is driving him closer to the Vs. This is not really surprising, seeing as this as been the direction he has been going in all along. Lisa has failed the empathy test – it seems that she really is falling for Tyler – so when they finally do the nasty in a spaceship, it’s not that much of a surprise either. Shame that Florence and the Machine’s great song Cosmic Love is used in a very clunky and obvious way over this scene. Waste of a good song. Joshua covers up for Lisa, so now she owes a favour to the Fifth Column.

Finally, Ryan finds Valerie – she went missing at the end of the previous episode – and protects her from a V at a Healing Centre who discovers that her baby is not human and is about to attack her. Surely the truth must out here? This was going to be one of the most interesting storylines of the show and it somehow got sidelined by other, less interesting subplots.

The end of the episode is pretty anticlimactic. The sniper is caught and tells Erica “We can’t win”. Well, if that is the case, then there is nothing left fighting for, and if there is nothing left worth fighting for, is there anything left work watching for? The show seems to have lost momentum in its second half. Maybe the long haitus that the show took in the US was detrimental to its survival, or maybe the writers just could not figure ouy where the show was supposed to go. Either way, if the show keeps going the way it is, it seems to be only a matter of time before it is cancelled – viewers are down, as is buzz and remakes of old shows rarely do well. It will be interesting to see if V can claw its way back from the edge.

Oh, and the CGI is still dreadful. As is Lisa’s make up. I have not seen such an obvious tide mark in years.

Megamind – Trailer

Posted by geeksyndicate on May 27, 2010

From the studio that brought you “Shrek,” “Madagascar” and “Kung Fu Panda.”  The brilliant and diabolical super-villain Megamind has been attempting to conquer Earth for over 20 years but, each time, he’s been thwarted by his arch nemesis, the caped superhero Metro Man.  But all that changes one day when Megamind accidentally kills Metro Man in the throes of one of his evil plans.  Suddenly finding himself without a foe to overcome, the despondent evil genius decides that the only way out of his rut is to create a new super rival.  He’s a bigger, better and stronger opponent than Metro Man ever was. But when the former good guy begins to wage his own war aimed at destroying the world, Megamind must decide:  Can he defeat his own (now) diabolical creation?  Can the world’s smartest man make the smart decision for once?  Can the Evil Genius switch sides and become the Hero of his own story?

Megamind – Trailer

Hmm I think this looks pretty good with some solid animation but I get the feeling it could be a bit too over the top for me. Even when he’s doing a voice over work Will Ferrell is still pretty much Will Ferrell (unless he’s in Anchorman which I loved).

For now I’m moving my chair to the ‘wait and see’ part of the room.

Advert Break – From the hidden Archives of 2000 AD comes Judge Dredd: The Restricted Files 02

Posted by geeksyndicate on May 27, 2010

2000 AD LOG

Judge Dredd:

The Restricted Files 02

John Wagner ♦ Alan Grant ♦ Carlos Esquerra ♦ Steve Dillon ♦ Many More

Available June 2010 for £19.99

FROM THE HIDDEN VAULTS OF THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT

Experience forgotten Mega-City One epics from yesteryear as Judge Dredd tackles crimes too big to be contained in the weekly Prog! Featuring never-before trade collected stories from 2000 AD annuals and specials released in the eighties, this is retro cool at its best!

About the creators:

John Wagner has been scripting for 2000 AD for more years than he cares to remember. His creations include Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog, Ace Trucking, Al’s Baby, Button Man and Mean Machine. Outside of 2000 AD his credits include Star Wars, Lobo, The Punisher and the critically acclaimed A History of Violence.

With over 300 2000 AD stories to his name – not to mention over 250 Daily Star Judge Dredd strips – Alan Grant’s prolific creative record speaks for itself. Outside the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic, Grant is well-known to Batman fans following a lengthy run on various incarnations of the title. More recently he has adapted Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novels Kidnapped and Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde in Graphic Novel format with artist Cam Kennedy.

It is impossible to overstate the importance of Carlos Ezquerra’s contribution to 2000 AD. As co-creator of Judge Dredd, for example, Ezquerra designed the classic original costume as  well as visually conceptualising Mega-City One… and then he co-created the only character arguably more popular, Strontium Dog! Ezquerra also co-created Al’s BabyArmageddonFiends of the Eastern Front andJanus: Psi Division, as well as the characters Galen DeMarco and Durham Red.

Steve Dillon is a fan-favourite 2000 AD writer and artist, and the creator of both Hap Hazzard and the Irish Judge Joyce.

His writing for the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic includes Future Shocks and Rogue Trooper, while Dillon’s pencils have graced

A.B.C. Warriors, Bad Company, Judge Dredd, Harlem Heroes, Ro-Busters, Rogue Trooper and Tyranny Rex. Dillon shot to

international superstardom as a result of his work on DC/Vertigo’s Preacher, co-created with 2000 AD’s Garth Ennis.

E4′s Misfits series 2 begins filming and announces transmission date!

Posted by geeksyndicate on May 27, 2010

So as filming kicks off on the second series of the fantastic Misfits Channel 4 have released a little press release to give you all the info on the 2nd series, due to air this November.

I loved the first series, much more than I was expecting to, so I’m really excited to see where the creators take the gang in the second series.

‘This sort of thing only happens in America…

Filming begins on E4’s BAFTA-nominated smash hit drama series MISFITS II; so strap on your ankle tags and lock up your kids, it’s all about to kick off again.

“Misfits blazed onto the screen with a terrific sense of humour, self confidence and brio”  – Daily Telegraph

“..a script that fizzes with wit and invention and a charismatic cast of next generation talentTime Out

“Misfits is funny, scary, full of emotion and character and…banter that would drop Joss Whedon from a hundred paces”

Bleeding Cool

Misfits is the most brilliantly aimed teen gang adventure there may have been on TV”

London Evening Standard

Everyone’s favourite ASBO teens, Nathan (Robert Sheehan), Kelly (BAFTA-nominee Lauren Socha), Curtis (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett), Alisha (Antonia Thomas) and Simon (Iwan Rheon) are back for a second series of E4’s hit comedy drama Misfits.

So to recap; a freak storm left our posse of social outcasts with slightly crap super powers;  Curtis can turn back time, Kelly can read minds, Simon can turn invisible and Alisha can send people into a sexual frenzy with just one touch.  Then there’s their two dead probation workers (one is buried under the local environmental monitoring station; the other stored in a freezer in the community centre).  And finally, unbeknownst to the others, Nathan is trapped six feet under in a coffin, immortal and very much alive.

But it’s not just the ASBO Five who were affected by the storm. With the super-charged local townsfolk going the way of Gotham City, each week as we head back to the community centre our gang will be faced with a whole new world of weird and wild characters.

And just who IS the masked, hooded stranger who seems to be watching their every move? A force for good? An evil arch-nemesis intent on bringing about our gang’s destruction? Or just another kid in a hoodie?

The 6 x 60 min series will be produced by Clerkenwell Films (Afterlife, Persuasion) for transmission on E4 in November 2010.

Director Tom Green (Misfits I) returns to the helm along with writer Howard Overman (Misfits, Merlin), producer Kate Crowe (Misfits I) and executive producers for Clerkenwell Films Murray Ferguson and Petra Fried.  The new series has been greenlit by Drama Commissioning Editor, Robert Wulff-Cochrane
