Waiting For The Trade – Secret Warriors: God of Fear, God of War HC

Posted by Dave on January 30, 2010

Writer: Jonathan Hickman

Pencillers: Alessandro Vitti, Ed McGuinness

Inker: Tom Palmer

Colourists: Chris Sotomayor, Sunny Gho

Letterer: Dave Lanphear

Collects: Secret Warriors 7-10, Dark Reign: The List – Secret Warriors

Secret Warriors is a book that spun out of Marvel’s Secret Invasion event. The cast of characters is centred by Nick Fury, ex of S.H.I.E.L.D. who is a man on a mission…although that mission isn’t always quite clear to everyone else. In preparation for the day when he had to go it alone Nick assembled a team of youngsters, all of whom have some sort of legacy in the Marvel Universe.

The team is led in the field by Daisy Johnson, who goes by the name Quake. Alongside her you have J.T. the grandson of the original Ghost Rider, Phobos the God of Fear AKA Alex, Sebastian Druid, Stonewall, Yo-yo and Eden.

This arc is a bit disjointed with the story from Dark Reign: The List splitting it down the middle. The first half of the book deals with Fury investigating a possible Hydra agent while J.T.’s exuberance leads Alex and Eden into trouble with Normal Osborne’s Dark Avengers. The List story finishes off the tale of the suspected Hydra agent and then the latter part of the book deals with the godhood of Alex. In the Ares mini-series of a few years back Alex was a human boy, but the events of that series left him in the somewhat illegitimate possession of godhood, something the high council of Earth’s Pantheons wants to have a word with him about.

The biggest thing that struck me other than that I prefer Jim Cheung’s art to Vitti’s is that this volume seems to lack the strong design sense that the first hardcover had. Whilst there’s some supplemental material in The List story that’s about it…and the book just doesn’t have Hickman’s usual design flourish.

The coolest moments of the book reside in The List story (which I’ll review elsewhere as part of The List HC that Marvel have put out) and consequently it feels like the four issues of the main series are just padding for that single issue. Volume 1 was packed with great moments whereas this just isn’t.

Press Release – BRITISH COMIC THE HUNTER LAUNCHES IN INDIA

Posted by geeksyndicate on January 29, 2010

I loved every page of the Hunter series  so this is one piece of news I’m really happy to report this expansion of the title into India.

With The Hunter  film adaptation in the works as well Dare Comics just seem to be going from strength to strength at the moment, as are so many other independent comic folks out there.

It just goes to show what you can do when you get off your ass and make stuff happen instead of waiting for ‘the big break’.

London, 29 January 2010 – Dare Comics today announces that its critically acclaimed comic, The Hunter, is to be published and distributed by OM Publications throughout India from March.

A contemporary superhero comic set against the backdrop of organised crime, The Hunter launched in 2007 to widespread critical acclaim and quickly built an international readership currently standing at more than 130,000 through its innovative print and online distribution strategy.

Writer and creator Adam Hamdy is pleased that an Indian audience will see The Hunter and is excited to be entering this rapidly expanding entertainment market. “Working with OM Publications is a great opportunity to see The Hunter introduced to a wider audience, and with huge growth expected in the Indian entertainment market in the coming years it is definitely a place we want to be.”

With comparisons already being drawn to some of Marvel Comics’ best work, Dare Comics, which was founded by Hamdy, is rapidly establishing a reputation for publishing quality comic books. Aint’ It Cool News awarded high praise to The Hunter, saying: “The Hunter harkened back to Stan and Jack’s best work at Marvel”.

Published in English, The Hunter will be available monthly through bookshops and on newsstands throughout the sub-continent. The initial run will be a 13 issue series of 22 page comics.

OM Publications have secured the exclusive distribution rights of The Hunter in India. OM Publications Chief Executive Officer, Ravi Shankar, says, “The Hunter is a unique comic series with highly compelling characters and storylines that appeal to the global marketplace. We are tremendously excited about the prospect of publishing and distributing The Hunter throughout India.”

“The Hunter has proven very successful in the European and American markets and we expect Indian fans will be as excited about this new superhero,” says Ravi Shankar.

It has been a fruitful few months for Dare Comics with the announcement in December that Los Angeles-based production company, Scarlet Fire Entertainment, has come on board to produce the movie adaptation of The Hunter. Hamdy will produce the movie adaption alongside Scarlet Fire, as well as write the feature screenplay.

OM Publications are announcing this deal to distribute Dare Comics The Hunter in
Hall 3-5, Booth 28, at the New Delhi World Book Fair,
the largest book fair in the Afro-Asian Region.
30 January – 7 February 2010

Alice in Wonderland – Meet the Cast

Posted by geeksyndicate on January 29, 2010

Now that you’ve seen the pretty pictures check out some background info on the characters and the actors playing them. If think there’s some cracking casting choices in there. I’m sorry but Alan Rickman playing a Caterpillar is a stroke of genius!

Helena Bonham Carter seems to be able to do crazy ass villainesses’s roles in her sleep these days so she be great in this role. The big head look just scares the hell out of me.

IRACEBETH, THE RED QUEEN (Helena Bonham Carter) is the tyrannical monarch of Underland. With her oversized head, fiery temper and propensity to scream for people’s heads to be chopped off, she rules her subjects through fear. “She’s got emotional problems,” says Bonham Carter. “It takes nothing, practically, for her to lose her temper. Her tantrums are that of a two-year-old.” Her younger sibling, the White Queen, has designs on the throne and crown that Iracebeth once stole from her.

ILOSOVIC STAYNE, THE KNAVE OF HEARTS (Crispin Glover) is the head of the Red Queen’s Army. Seven feet, six-inches tall, with a scarred face and a heart-shaped patch covering his left eye, Stayne is an arrogant, tricky character who follows the Red Queen’s every order. He’s the only one capable of pacifying her and calming her dramatic mood swings. “I am the martial element for the Red Queen,” says Glover. “The Red Queen has a fair amount of short-tempered reactions to things that people do, and so my character has to be quite diplomatic.” His darker side emerges in the shadows of the castle hallways.

TMCTWISP, THE WHITE RABBIT (voice of Michael Sheen) is always late, always in a hurry, always rushing about. Charged with finding Alice and bringing her back to Underland so that she can fulfill her destiny, he shows up at her garden party in an effort to lure her back down the rabbit hole. “He’s a warm character,” says Sheen, “but, at the same time, he can be quite fussy and quite strict with Alice as well. He has an edge to him, a nervous energy, always feeling like he’s behind time. Time is very important to him, but he’s quite brave when called upon.”

MALLYMKUN, THE DORMOUSE (voice of Barbara Windsor) is a swashbuckling mouse in Underland who wears riding breeches. She refuses to believe that the White Rabbit has found the right Alice, the one who can help return Underland to its true splendor, and is only too happy to poke poor Alice in the ankle with a hat pin when Alice insists she’s only dreaming. But the tough little mouse comes through in a pinch when Alice is threatened by a clawing creature called a Bandersnatch. Her loyalty to the Hatter is unmatched, and she willingly faces the prospect of death to stand by him.

ABSOLEM, THE CATERPILLAR (voice of Alan Rickman) is the all-knowing and absolute guardian of the Oraculum, an ancient document that depicts every major event, past, present and future, in Underland’s history. Alice is taken by the White Rabbit and the Tweedles to meet Absolem, so that he can ascertain whether she is, in fact, the real Alice who first visited Underland as a child, the Alice who is destined to help them. They find the bulbous blue caterpillar atop a mushroom in a mushroom forest surrounded by misty smoke. Several times Absolem challenges Alice to come to a better understanding of herself, forcing her to face the difficult question: “Who are you?”

Press Release – PETER SERAFINOWICZ at FORBIDDEN PLANET

Posted by geeksyndicate on January 29, 2010

Diary Date: Monday 1st February 6 – 7pm

Forbidden Planet is pleased to announce a signing by PETER SERAFINOWICZ. He will be signing the DVD release of The Peter Serafinowicz Show at the Forbidden Planet Megastore, 179 Shaftesbury Avenue, London WC2h 8JR on Monday 1st February 6 – 7pm

Peter Serafinowicz is a cult figure, known by fans for his show-stealing appearances in Spaced, Black Books, How Do You Want Me?, Look Around You and Shaun of the Dead. He also has a hugely credible list of guest appearances to his name – including, famously, providing the voice for Darth Maul in Phantom Menace.

Taking a humorous swipe at today’s choice of viewing, the BAFTA-Award nominated The Peter Serafinowicz Show hosts gloriously futile television game shows, including Heads Or Tails? and Which Hand Is It In?, while offering exclusive ‘celebrity’ interviews on O! News.

Through his impressions of familiar faces, Peter creates a world in which Simon Cowell and Terry Wogan mingle with famous fictional characters like Darth Vader and with his own quirky creations – like the wonderfully incompetent PI Brian Butterfield. And look out for Robert De Niro, Marlon Brando, Mikey, Mikey and Mikey, and Kitchen Gun’s Derek Bum.

Just Cause 2 Multi-Path Trailer Allows Viewers To Direct The Action

Posted by geeksyndicate on January 29, 2010

I still have no idea what the finished version will be like but after seeing this innovative muti-path trailer (you’ve just got to give it go) then game is now officially on my pre-order list.

Everything I’m seeing of the sequel is telling me that, like Assassin’s Creed 2, the developers have listened to gamers comments about the first game and have done their best to address them. It remains to be seen just how well they’ve done at fixing the issues from the first game.

Check out the trailer and the press release for all the info you can fire a grappling hook at. Yeah I know it that last line was a lot funnier in my head.

.With complete freedom to take on the Island of Panau from any angle, a mission in Just Cause 2 is never quite the same twice. So when Jade Tan, one of the Agency’s key operatives in Panau, falls into enemy hands, how you get her back really is up to you. To give gamers an idea of the choices available in-game, we have created an innovative multi-path trailer on the Official Just Cause 2 YouTube Channel (at www.youtube.com/officialjustcause2), allowing fans of the game the choice in how Rico’s rescue plays out. Use your grapple and parachute to go in stealthily, coming in from the air and grappling guards out of towers; or go all-guns-a’blazin’, destroying everything and anyone in sight? Take a jeep and ride it down a mountainside or use an aerial bombardment of rockets from a hijacked helicopter? The choice is yours, and each clip will give you a different taste of the high-octane gameplay that will make Just Cause 2 one of the stand-out titles of 2010.

As Rico Rodriguez, the Agency’s most powerful weapon, players must take on the island of Panau and its military regime in order to track down Rico’s former boss and mentor, Tom Sheldon, who has gone rogue with millions in Agency cash and intel. Using a unique grapple and parachute combination, there is no vertical limit as the air becomes your playground: grapple a passing plane in flight, hijack helicopters, BASE jump from the tallest buildings or mountains and leave a trail of chaos and destruction in your wake. Just Cause 2 offers players the freedom to attack missions any way they choose and, with over 100 vehicles and countless upgrades and collectibles, the choices for relentless adrenaline-fuelled action are limitless.

You can find the Multi-path trailer on the Official Just Cause 2 Channel on YouTube at www.youtube.com/officialjustcause2 or on the official website at www.JustCause.com.
