If anyone one will be free next weekend and you’ll be around Leicester Square in London at the time, stop by the Prince Charles on Saturday the 8th and catch Film4 Frightfest’s Spring Awakening day of films.
Frightfest is London’s very own Fantastic film festival held every August that showcases the UK and the world’s best movies. While I’m bummed that I’m not in the UK for this event, I am pretty impressed with how the program is set up. Here is the schedule of events.
Embodiment of Evil is definitely one of the tops of this list. It’s the final chapter to the Brazilian Boogeyman Coffin Joe, a character Jose Mojica Marins has been building into a cultural phenomena in films and comics since the 60′s. Repo! is another strong addition due to it’s start as an off Broadway opera and an exile into DVD due to politics. While I heard Not Quite Hollywood is quite good, I’ve not seen it yet. Turkey Shoot is a quite fun and gory postapocaliptic version of The Most Dangerous Game. Great little film.
If you want tickets, Contact the Prince Charles Cinema box office.
Over in Toronto, The Bloor Cinema, the Mecca for Canadian Grindhouse fans, will be taken over by Shawn Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz director Edgar Wright for the month of March. His reign of terror starts tonight with a showing of his two films and he’ll continue on hosting double bills on Saturdays through March and into April. He is the working schedule so far.
This week Barry has a rant about the Razzies. Both the guys rant on the latest series renewal news and Dave finds probably the most awesome T-Shirt in the world. In a shocking turn of events Dave actually has some gaming news!
In the Week that Was look out for reviews and chat on 24,Legend of the Seeker, Being Human, RoadCrewComic, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, Invisible Inc and Lost.
In our main feature we bring you our exclusive review of the Watchmen movie!
Enjoy and remember our competition The Lost Watchman is still going!
My first thought was how surprising that Warner Bros. have gone for a team of villains as a movie concept but then I thought about it. One villain won an oscar, well the actor won a posthumous oscar, The Secret Six, a comic by Gail Simone about a team of villain mercenaries has done very well. So maybe it’s not a surprise, villains seem to be in vogue at the moment.
The thought of remaking a popular movie or retelling a popular story is bound to provoke a reaction. Some people love the idea, some people hate it. When it’s a popular story by a legendary creator, that reaction may range from people believing the new creator is completely arrogant to try and re-imagine a masterpiece, to considering altering the original story even in the slightest to be sacrilege.
But sometimes, like here, the creators do it completely right.
It’s early in convention season and with this weekend being my first show of the year in WonderCon I figure rather than blather on about convention etiquette like so many other columns and podcasts do I would instead share the great wisdom that is the greatest memories from my convention going life. I’ve just picked up this press release from the BBC website which has quite a bit of info (with some spoilers, so be warned for the third series).
Robin Hood was one of those shows that I had high hopes for but never achieved anything near what it could be have been (Robin of Sherwood still holds that title for me). Given how the last season ended I’m worried about how this season will pan out.
There are also rumours that Jonas Armstrong(Robin) is leaving after this season and yet the BBC plan to keep going with the show (hmm I see a problem with that plan).
I’m a sucker for anything swashbuckling so, against my better judgement, I’ll check out the third season. I’m hoping the dramatic changes made to the cast/story will give the show a fresh lease of life.
Check out the press release for more info. Watch out for spoilers though!
Ok one of these bits of news has me giddy with excitement the other shreiking in terror. If you listen to our podcast you can probably guess which one.
Fans of the Clone Wars cartoon can breathe a little easier today. Over at the Cartoon Network they’ve just announced that they are bringing back the show for a second season. I really excited by this news. I’ve been enjoying the hell out of the current series and was hoping that there would be a second season.
If you’ve not had the chance to check out the Clone Wars you really should as it’s kick ass!
The answer is I’m not sure but a lot of the points coming out in this press release is on the samw wavelength as what we’ve been saying on the show. Now I still love reading my comics in trade or single issues but I would be quite happy to read a lot of the stuff online. It seems like these guys are trying to produce something that is going to make that easier to do.
Anyway Check out the Press Release and make your own mind up.

At 6 o’clock I entered Leicester Square. there was a moderate crowd, about what you would expect from a movie that was marketed to the hilt but at it’s core still a very niche film. I found myself a nice a space as i could by a barrier and waited. It was a little cold but bearably so and there was a muted air of semi excitement. Over in the press enclosure i could spy Rich Johnston the comics gossip columnist.
