Tony Chu is a cop. A cop with a weird power. He’s cibopathic, which means that when he eats something, he sees the entire history of it. And with a power like this, and a job like his, he often has to eat strange things, like human things.
The multi-Eisner award-winning series starts its newest story arc “Space Cakes”, which has a bit of change of pace for the readers, and the story. Read the rest of this entry »

Brian Wood has been around in comics for over a decade and it seems that only more recently has he hit a creative stride. Sure he cut his independent teeth on 1997′s Channel Zero (Image Comics), 2003′s Demo (AiT/Planet Lar) and other projects – both creator-owned and mainstream, but it’s with his latest string of original work through DC Comic’s Vertigo imprint that has been remarkable.
As his two main Vertigo series, DMZ and Northlanders, sadly drew closer to their respective conclusions fans were left wondering what he would come up with next and if it will be as intriguing and engaging as his prior work. After a move to Dark Horse Comics, Brian Wood brings us The Massive, and to this reviewer the answer – based on only the first issue – is potentially YES. Read the rest of this entry »

The Transformation of J.H. O’Donnell is a standalone that fills a small gap in the B.P.R.D. mythos with a tale about a supporting cast member, whilst telling a strong and satisfying horror story for those unfamiliar with the series.
The story chronicles what happened to the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defence’s resident ranting researcher, J.H. O’Donnell, that made him go crazy. Read the rest of this entry »

This year’s Eagle Awards were announced on Sunday at the MCM London Comic Con. Although congratulations are in order to the award-winners, the Eagle Awards -which first began in 1976 – will be retired and overhauled into the MCM Awards as of next year.
There is largely nothing overwhelmingly earth-shattering in this year’s award winners (the only surprise in the list being perhaps 2000AD losing its seat as Best British Colour Comicbook to Doctor Who Magazine). However, I have to admit being happy to see Jeff Lemire, Scott Snyder and 20th Century Boys getting some gongs. Anywho fellow Geeks – these should tide us over until the Eisner Awards in July. Below is the list of categories for the award winners, and their fellow nominees. Winners are in bold: Read the rest of this entry »

Before there was Spandex, there was The O Men. By the same creative mind Martin Eden the award nominated series follows Doctor O as he gathers together a new superhero team calling them The O Men.
When one thing has been such a hit I am sure it must be difficult at times to come back to an older piece of work. But Martin Eden has nothing to worry about as The O Men is a stunning piece of comic fiction. Read the rest of this entry »

Military science fiction is outside of my normal reading choices. I normally prefer comedic fantasy (Terry Pratchett et al), surreal tales of horror and paranoia (Philip K. Dick and Clive Barker) or urban fantasy (Charles De Lint). So when a chance came to review the new short novel by JAK HOLDING – the pen name of two authors John Jackson and Ken Chapman – I jumped at the chance to read outside my comfort zone. I’ve spent the better part of my life browsing book shelves – hell, I’ve spent the better part of my life scanning specifically Fantasy and Science Fiction bookshelves – and there are still a bajillion authors I’ve never read. Publishers and book shops all have their ways of promoting them but the fact remains there are some writers for whom we all have blind spots.
Case in point – I’ve seen Philip Jose Farmer’s name in practically every library, every second-hand book shop and every article about classic SF over the years, but I don’t recall ever actually picking up one of his books or having him recommended to me by a fellow book geek. The same could be said for Niven and Pournelle. Hey, don’t throw rocks at me! Read the rest of this entry »
